Chapter 5

Author's pov

“Why are you staring at the gate like it’s going to confess its feelings to you?”

Shreya’s voice snapped Vani out of her thoughts.

“I’m not staring,” Vani said, adjusting her hair for the third time in one minute.

Arushi rolled her eyes. “You’ve been staring for 7 minutes and 32 seconds.”

“You were COUNTING?!”

“I get bored easily.”

Before Vani could argue, the school gate opened—

And in walked Eshaan.

White shirt. Sleeves folded. That effortlessly annoying confidence.

Vani’s brain: offline.

“Oh look, your WiFi disconnected,” Arushi muttered.

“Shut up,” Vani whispered, not even blinking.

Eshaan laughed at something his friend said, then his eyes casually moved—

And stopped.

On her.

For a second.

Just a second.

But that was enough.

“HE LOOKED AT ME,” Vani hissed.

“Congratulations. Basic human vision,” Arushi replied dryly.

Shreya smirked. “Go talk to him.”

“I will NOT embarrass myself.”

“You already are.”

Vani inhaled deeply. “Okay. I’m going.”

She took one step forward.

Stopped.

Turned back.

“I’m not going.”

Arushi facepalmed.

But fate clearly had its own plans.

Because Eshaan was now walking towards them.

“Oh great,” Arushi muttered, “hero entry.”

Vani stood still like a statue.

“Hey,” Eshaan said casually.

“Hey,” Shreya replied.

Arushi gave a lazy nod.

Vani? Buffering.

“You’re quiet today,” Eshaan said, looking directly at her.

“I—no—I mean—I talk. A lot. Usually. Not now. I mean—hi.”

Silence.

Shreya turned away.

Arushi looked at the sky.

Eshaan smiled.

Actually smiled.

“Relax,” he said softly, “I don’t bite.”

I wouldn’t mind if you did, her brain betrayed her.

“Yeah… I know,” she managed.

“Good,” he said, stepping back. “See you around.”

And just like that—he left.

Vani grabbed Shreya’s arm.

“I’m moving schools.”

“Why?”

“I embarrassed my entire bloodline.”

Arushi smirked. “At least he smiled.”

Vani froze.

“…He did, didn’t he?”

And suddenly—

She was smiling too.

Shreya × Aarav

“Give it back.”

“No.”

“Aarav.”

“No.”

Shreya chased him across the classroom while he held her phone high in the air.

“You went through my gallery?!”

“I was bored,” he said casually.

“I will literally—”

“Oh look,” he interrupted, “my name… saved with a heart.”

Dead silence.

Shreya froze.

“You are DEAD.”

Aarav grinned. “So you admit it?”

“I admit NOTHING.”

“Then why the heart?”

“Because—because—it’s aesthetic!”

“Aesthetic,” he repeated.

“Yes.”

“With my name?”

“Yes.”

“With three hearts?”

“…Shut up.”

He laughed.

Not teasing this time.

Soft. Genuine.

“You’re cute when you’re angry,” he said.

That.

Was not supposed to be said.

Shreya blinked.

Once.

Twice.

“You’re annoying when you’re alive,” she shot back quickly.

But her cheeks?

Red.

Very red.

He noticed.

Of course he did.

“Say it,” he said quietly.

“Say what?”

“That you like me.”

She crossed her arms. “Make me.”

He stepped closer.

Not too close.

But close enough.

“Say it,” he repeated.

Her heartbeat got louder.

Faster.

“Or what?” she challenged.

He leaned slightly.

“Or I will.”

And just before the moment could explode—

“WHY DOES EVERYONE LOOK LIKE THEY’RE IN A DRAMA?!” Vani yelled, entering the class.

Shreya pushed Aarav away instantly.

“Idiot.”

Arav smirked.

“Coward.”

But neither of them denied it.

Arushi × Reyansh

“If you follow me one more time, I’m filing a complaint.”

Reyansh raised an eyebrow. “Against what? Gravity?”

“Against YOU.”

“I’m just walking.”

“In the same direction as me.”

“Coincidence.”

“For 10 minutes?”

“Fate.”

“Annoying fate.”

He smirked. “You noticed.”

She stopped walking.

Turned.

“Listen, Mr. Irritating—”

“Mr. Handsome, actually.”

“I will push you.”

“Do it.”

She did.

He stepped back… and laughed.

“You’re aggressive.”

“You’re unbearable.”

“And yet you keep talking to me.”

“I argue. Not talk.”

“Difference?”

“I don’t enjoy this.”

“You do.”

“I DON’T.”

“You do.”

“I swear—”

He suddenly grabbed her wrist and pulled her slightly aside as a group ran past.

For a second—

Everything paused.

Too close.

Too quiet.

Too… something.

She quickly pulled her hand back.

“I didn’t need help.”

“You would’ve been pushed.”

“I would’ve survived.”

“I know.”

Silence.

Then—

“Still annoying,” she muttered.

“Still talking,” he replied.

And somehow—

Neither of them walked away.

Lunch break = chaos zone.

Everyone gathered.

Food opened.

Drama started.

“Okay,” Vani began dramatically, “Eshaan talked to me today.”

“We know,” Arushi said. “You announced it to three classrooms.”

“I did NOT.”

“You did.”

“Focus!” Vani said. “He smiled.”

Shreya grinned. “Progress.”

Reyansh leaned back. “Basic human behavior.”

“No one asked you,” Vani snapped.

“I answer anyway.”

Meanwhile—

Aarav casually stole fries from Shreya’s plate.

“Excuse me?” she said.

“Our fries.”

“MY fries.”

“Communism.”

“I will throw this plate at you.”

“Romantic.”

“SHUT UP.”

Everyone laughed.

Even Arushi.

Even Reyansh.

Even Vani—

Until she noticed something.

All of them.

Laughing.

Fighting.

Teasing.

Together.

It felt…

Perfect.

“Guys,” she said softly.

“What?” Aarav asked.

“Let’s always stay like this.”

“Chaotic?” Reyansh said.

“Alive,” she corrected.

Shreya smiled. “We will.”

Arushi nodded. “Obviously.”

Arav added, “Nothing’s changing.”

Eshaan, who had just joined them, looked at Vani.

“Nothing,” he repeated.

Vani smiled.

A real one.

But for a split second—

Something flickered in her eyes.

Like she knew something they didn’t.

Like she was holding onto this moment…

A little too tightly.

Because somewhere deep inside—

She felt it.

This chaos.

This laughter.

This perfect mess—

Wasn’t going to stay forever.
